Case Study: Municipal Crisis Communications

As a small community directly threatened by future flooding due to climate change, our municipal client faced a massive, multi-pronged challenge.

The provincial government had mandated the town to take proactive steps to reduce future flooding risks to protect lives and property. The very safety - and existence - of the community was at stake.

The flood mitigation project included significant construction work necessary for mitigating future flooding, as well as relocating residents in high-risk areas, which in some instances required displacing people from their homes. Unsurprisingly, emotions were high.

Furthermore, the town faced a very vocal minority of residents who expressed skepticism about the actual threat of flooding or even the existence of climate change. In the early days, project managers had also failed to be proactive with communications, contributing to confusion, misinformation and a severe lack of trust. There was a lot of catching up to do when it came to creating community buy-in for the project.

Alchemy Communications was brought in to ease resident tensions, which had reached a fever pitch, and to get critical communications out as quickly as possible.
